And Sublime Text is always able to keep up with my typing. Navigation and project switching are nearly instantaneous. Multiple selections and column selections make quick work of the sorts of annoying edits that used to require regular expressions. Many features that I initially thought Sublime Text lacked-including JSLint and JSHint interfaces, JsFormat, JsMinify, and PrettyJSON-turn out to be available through the community, using the Package Installer.īut the Sublime Text feature that stands out most is speed. There is an active community around Sublime Text that creates and maintains Sublime Text packages and plug-ins. Language-specific definitions are XML preferences files. You can customize everything about Sublime Text: the color scheme, text font, the global key bindings, the tab stops, the file-specific key bindings and snippets, and even the syntax highlighting rules. Sublime Text has many noteworthy strengths: support for more than 70 file types, among them JavaScript, HTML, and CSS multiple selections (make a bunch of changes all at once) including column selections (select a rectangular area of the file) multiple windows (use all your monitors) and split windows (take advantage of your screen real estate) complete customization with simple JSON files a Python-based plug-in API a unified, searchable command palette and strong Git support. For programmers coming from other editors, Sublime Text supports TextMate bundles (excluding commands) and Vi/Vim emulation. If you don’t mind switching to other windows for code checking, debugging, and deployment, then you will almost certainly enjoy using Sublime Text. Sublime Text is a flexible, powerful, extensible programming text editor that is lightning fast. Also note the “peek” pop-up for trackSelection() in the middle of the screen. Note the messages (created using information from the Git repository) that show the authors of the functions and the most recent change dates. The source code of Visual Studio Code viewed in Visual Studio Code. It’s free despite the commercial license. The VS Code product itself ships under a standard Microsoft product license, as it has a small percentage of Microsoft-specific customizations. The code in the Visual Studio Code repository is open source under the MIT License. (VS Code even supports remote debugging for some languages.) You can add basic support for your favorite language through TextMate colorizers if no language server is available. The richness of support varies across the different programming languages and their extensions, ranging from simple syntax highlighting and bracket matching to debugging and refactoring. The extensions are updated as often as needed. VS Code proper is built using the Electron shell, Node.js, TypeScript, and the Language Server protocol, and is updated on a monthly basis. Much of this was adapted from Visual Studio technology. VS Code has IntelliSense code completion for variables, methods, and imported modules graphical debugging linting, multi-cursor editing, parameter hints, and other powerful editing features snazzy code navigation and refactoring and built-in source code control including Git support. It comes with built-in support for JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js and has a rich ecosystem of extensions for other languages (such as C++, C#, Java, Python, PHP, and Go) and runtimes (such as. Visual Studio Code, or VS Code for short, is a lightweight but powerful source code editor that runs on your desktop and is available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. (I’m not the only Sublime Text user who doesn’t bother to enter the license on every machine I have-the nag screen is easily dismissed.) What is Visual Studio Code? If you don’t license Sublime Text (or Merge) you’ll see an occasional nag screen. You can evaluate Sublime Text for free, but the code is proprietary, and if you use Sublime Text continuously you should buy a user license for $80, and possibly a Sublime Merge license for $99. You can use Visual Studio Code forever for free, and it is mostly open source. Both products run on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. If you step back and look at the bigger picture, Sublime Text and Visual Studio Code are two of the best multi-language, multi-OS programming editors-Sublime Text for its speed as much as its convenient editing features, and Visual Studio Code for even better features and speed that is almost as good. Neither is restricted to JavaScript, or even JavaScript plus HTML and CSS. In my comparisons of JavaScript editors and JavaScript IDEs, my top recommendations often include Sublime Text (as an editor) and Visual Studio Code (as either an editor or an IDE).

But you know, if someone put me in that frame category, it would be pretty flattering.Īwesome, what’s your favourite album by Death Cab For Cutie? I mean, I try not to live up to an expectation of another artist. Do you aspire to create lyrics as good as theirs? I also see you’re a Death Cab For Cutie fan. It’s very, very, very collaborative, it’s a rare thing to have a song be written without all five of us present. Most of the times, it comes out sounding completely different than the original idea. Yeah, it’s very collaborative, like everybody in the band can play guitar for example, and you know, some of us can play drums for a little bit and so when it comes to songwriting somebody will just you know, bring a rare form of idea to practice and then play for everybody. How does the band approach songwriting? Is it a collaborative effort? Booked recording time with Brad Wood and did that in about two weeks, and then we just had to sit around and wait for the record to come out. So, we had some time at home and practised a few times a week. We had done a lot of touring off the record before and you know, we just started writing songs. How did the process of making that album come along? So your 2013 album, Is Survived By was incredibly well-received by both music critics and fans. It’s safe to say that the band are ready to turn things down a notch and in this interview, Jeremy explains it all. Following the success of their 2013 release, Is Survived By, Touché Amore have been non-stop touring in the last year or so while traveling to parts of Europe, the US and Asia. Fans can expect a whirlwind of crazy shows that by the end of the night, speaking for as little as possible is the only option they can take really. All we had was time to reflect on the past-on what makes this important to us. But then the whole world shut down, and in its newly suspended animation we took the longest break we ever have from playing live, writing music together, even being in the same town. Vocalist Jordan Dryer states: "I didn't spend much time looking ahead in the first five or so years of this band, and didn't anticipate spending much time looking back either, even as one ten year anniversary came and another one approached. Direct support will be provided by Sweet Pill and Pictoria Vark, with dates listed below. Post-hardcore band La Dispute have announced a delayed ten-year anniversary North American tour in celebration of their 2011 record, Wildlife. Still, Kuper’s work admirably deletes the most offensive of Conrad’s language while presenting graphically the struggle of the native population in the face of foreign exploitation. In his introduction, Kuper outlines his approach to the original book, which featured extensive use of the n-word and worked from a general worldview that European males are the forgers of civilization (even if they suffered a “soul had gone mad” for their efforts), explaining that “by choosing a different point of view to illustrate, otherwise faceless and undefined characters were brought to the fore without altering Conrad’s text.” There is a moment when a scene of indiscriminate shelling reveals the Africans fleeing, and there are some places where the positioning of the Africans within the panel gives them more prominence, but without new text added to fully frame the local people, it’s hard to feel that they have reached equal footing. Marlow’s trip to what was known as the Dark Continent exposes him to the frustrations of bureaucracy, the inhumanity employed by Europeans on the local population, and the insanity plaguing those committed to turning a profit. This well-connected vagabond then regales his friends with his boyhood obsession with the blank places on maps, which eventually led him to captain a steamboat up a great African river under the employ of a corporate empire dedicated to ripping the riches from foreign land. Even the reader who hasn’t experienced such fantasies will likely know just how Doucet feels.ĭoucet’s dreamscape is an intriguing place to visit, though it might be a little scary to live there.Ĭartoonist Kuper ( Kafkaesque, 2018, etc.) delivers a graphic-novel adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s literary classic exploring the horror at the center of colonial exploitation.Īs a group of sailors floats on the River Thames in 1899, a particularly adventurous member notes that England was once “one of the dark places of the earth,” referring to the land before the arrival of the Romans. As with Harvey Pekar’s early collaborations with Robert Crumb, she presents the work as straightforward confessions from a mundane existence, never romanticizing herself or belaboring the humor. Over the passage of years, the panels become larger and lighter, with a little more breathing room, as if the pressures on the artistic subconscious have eased a little. All of the dreams and drawings are dated, mainly from the late 1980s and early 90s (when Doucet was in her early-to-mid-20s). From menstruation to masturbation to motherhood (she births and nurses a cat), she proceeds in fearless fashion, as if she has never experienced an impulse that she feels is forbidden to illustrate and share. She crams her drawings with obsessive detail, to humorous and occasionally claustrophobic effect. Many of the strips transverse or dissolve the boundary between dreams and Doucet’s conscious state, with some of them showing her awakening to the discovery of what a weird dream she’d been having, while others reflect dreams within dreams. Penis envy (or at least obsession) informs a number of the other dreams, as one of them allows the artist with her surprising new appendage to have a different kind of fun with her girlfriends (and attract a very interested Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees). Within this journal of dreams, one strip that she titles “If I Was a Man” shows in explicit detail how she’d have sex with a woman, one who would have to have huge breasts, because Doucet would have such a large penis. Graphic narratives don’t get much more graphic than the comix of Doucet (My New York Diary, 1999). A dirty mind proves creatively liberating and socially subversive, as this Montreal native finds catharsis for her deepest fears, desires and neuroses through these drawings of her dreams. And wielders of nuclear arsenals have limited options for how to test their kit. So nuclear warheads are actually surprisingly sensitive little things. And very expensive components containing tritium, an isotope of hydrogen, have to be quite regularly replaced, since the tritium depletes over time. Metals inside warheads can also become fragile over time, given the intense radiation to which they are exposed. But this wire had a habit of becoming brittle when stored, and it often broke or got stuck at the moment of arming. These had a wire inside that had to be pulled out in order to arm the weapon. Nuclear warheads have also sometimes been built with flawed components. “One can imagine the Russians might have similar sorts of because the manufacturing has changed,” says Wellerstein. Reports suggest the military had to relearn how to make this material. In the early 2000s, the US struggled to source a classified material (whose purpose is also classified), codenamed FOGBANK, for its nuclear warheads. Doing so involves certain safety risks, notes Lynn Rusten of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a think tank: “It would be really worrisome if we saw any indication that they were moving those warheads out of storage.” To our knowledge, Russia has not begun “mating” those tactical warheads to delivery systems, such as missiles. Roughly 2,000 are considered “tactical”-smaller warheads that could be used on, for example, a foreign battlefield. Russia has around 4,500 non-retired nuclear warheads, according to the Federation of American Scientists, a nonprofit that focuses on security. Russia’s former defense minister, Dmitry Medvedev, has been particularly vocal about his country’s readiness to use nuclear weapons- including against Ukraine. In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed new strategic nuclear weapons systems had been placed on combat duty, and he threatened to resume nuclear testing. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has, sadly, brought the specter of nuclear weaponry to the fore once again. The missile could blow up on the launchpad, explains Wellerstein. No nation has ever tested a nuclear warhead delivered by an intercontinental ballistic missile. The Soviet Union had performed a similar test the previous year, and China followed in 1966. Surprisingly, as far as we know, the US has only ever tested a live nuclear warhead using a live missile system once, way back in 1962. And while these did prove the countries’ nuclear capabilities, they don’t guarantee that a warhead strapped to a missile or some other delivery system would work today. The 20th century witnessed more than 2,000 nuclear tests-the vast majority carried out by the US and the Soviet Union. “Nobody really knows,” says Alex Wellerstein, a nuclear weapons historian at the Stevens Institute of Technology. If someone actually tried to use one, though, would it definitely go off as intended? Thankfully, nuclear warheads mostly just sit there, motionless and silent, cozy in their silos and underground storage caverns. Countries including the US, Russia, and China wield hefty nuclear arsenals and regularly squabble over how to manage them-only last week, Russia suspended participation in its nuclear arms reduction treaty with the US. That harrowing future may seem outlandish to some, but only because no nation has detonated a nuclear weapon in conflict since 1945. Flattened cities, millions of people burnt to death, and yet more tortured by radioactive fallout. This ensures that external users cannot access your AWS sandbox.Īfter this is set up, your user should be able to access any EC2 instances, Lambda functions, or other services included in the security group. This VPC should be managed by a security policy that only allows inbound access from your trusted IP addresses. When setting up your EC2 configuration you need to create a virtual private cloud (VPC). The components of your AWS sandbox environment should include basic configurations of EC2, S3 storage volumes, and the IAM roles covered above. Once permissions are granted, the user can use the sandbox to experiment in AWS. The owner role is responsible for managing the creation of the sandbox and setting up the permissions given to the user. When creating a sandbox account in AWS, you first need to define your user roles-an Owner and a SandboxUser. How to Create a Sandbox Account on AWS Basics This prevents you from incurring excess expenses and prevents unintentional exposure of your production systems. The benefit of an AWS sandbox account is that it is separate from your organizational account. Creating a sandbox environment in AWS can be a useful way to test new configurations, train users, or evaluate new services. Now that you understand what a sandbox environment is, you can see how working with an AWS environment can be beneficial. It also enables you to strictly control your test conditions, preventing system processes or other applications from interfering with your results. This enables you to evaluate processes and programs without fear of impacting your primary environment. The benefit of a sandbox is that it creates an environment that is disconnected from your primary environment. You can use sandboxes to develop application features, test for and identify bugs, isolate malware or other security threats, test patches, or before going live with lift and shift applications. These environments may also be referred to as test or development servers or working directories. Sandboxes are environments you can use to execute programs or code in isolation.

Though everyone might not agree on cats’ perfection, felines are among the most popular pets in the world today, with as many as 74 million cats living in U.S. “I think that there was no need to subject cats to such a selection process since it was not necessary to change them,” Geigl says. Dogs were selected to perform specific tasks-which never was the case for cats-and this selection for particular traits is what led to dogs’ diversification to the many breeds we see today. This is in contrast to dogs, the first animals to be domesticated, Geigl adds. (See " Our Most Stunning Pictures of Big Cats.") Domestic cats look similar to wildcats, but they aren’t solitary, tolerating both humans and other cats. Overall, cats became a domesticated companion of humans without changing much, says evolutionary geneticist and article coauthor Eva-Maria Geigl. It was only in the 18th century, however, that the markings became common enough to be associated with domestic cats, and in the 19th century, cat fanciers began selecting cats with particular traits to create fancy breeds. The gene for a tabby coat dates back to the Ottoman Empire in Southwest Asia and later became common in Europe and Africa. The study sheds light on the late emergence of the blotched or striped coat markings, which began to appear in domesticated tabby cats in the Middle Ages. Surprisingly, wild and domestic cats showed no major differences in their genetic makeup, and one of the few traits available for telling them apart was the tabby coat marking. Tabby Takeoverīy comparing the DNA of cats throughout history, the study captures a glimpse of how the animals were changing even before humans started to cart them across the globe, Ottoni says. The results suggest that prehistoric human populations probably began carrying their cats along ancient land and sea trade routes to control rodents. This Egyptian cat probably had behaviors that made it attractive to humans, such as sociability and tameness. However, one resident has made it her mission to look after Jerusalem's strays and give them the best life possible.Ī second lineage, consisting of African cats that dominated Egypt, spread into the Mediterranean and most of the Old World beginning around 1500 B.C. Instead, people more or less allowed cats to domesticate themselves. “It’s not that humans took some cats and put them inside cages,” he says. “This is probably how the first encounter between humans and cats occurred,” says study coauthor Claudio Ottoni of the University of Leuven. Cats likely followed the rodent populations and, in turn, frequently approached the human settlements. Mice and rats were attracted to crops and other agricultural byproducts being produced by human civilizations. (See little-known small cats in “ Out of the Shadows, the Wildcats You’ve Never Seen.”) The cats likely started hanging around farming communities in the Fertile Crescent about 8,000 years ago, where they settled into a mutually beneficial relationship as humans’ rodent patrol.
